Puppets and Props are a great way to help children enjoy language and stories.
Kate learnt how to use puppets and props in storytelling through the live storytelling of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Live storytelling is like acting out a play.
The props:
3 teddy bears - one big, one medium and one small
3 bowls - one big, one medium and one small (recycled ones are great to teach the children about sustainability at the same time).
3 spoons - one big, one medium and one small
3 'chairs' - again use your imagination. They don't need to be real chairs. They could be blocks.
3 'beds' - shoe boxes, wooden boxes, cushions anything will do and again one big, one medium and one small.
a doll or hand made "Goldilocks".
The learning:
Goldilocks is an integrated learning experience that teaches many concepts at one time including:
science concepts of hot, cold, hard, soft
maths concepts of big, medium, small
literacy concepts of repetition, rhyme
safety concepts of shut the door when you go out
sensory experiences - the children love to cuddle the bears and explore the props
links with children's experiences and family life - you can talk about what they eat for breakfast and link it in with learning about health and nutrition.
Things to remember:
Stick to the storyline with fairytales and if you would like to change it, then ask the children for their ideas.
Be happy, engaging, look up and smile.
Use different voices for different characters.
Ask the children questions about the story.
Let the children say some of the lines or finish some of the lines for you.
Get the children to play some of the characters once they know the story well.

Watch here for a video of Kate acting out the story before we did a script.
TASK 1: The script was written to help Kate call on her acting experience and stick to the topic. Act out the play again one day with your coach and get them to video it and put it up on here so you can see how far you have come with your storytelling.
TASK 2: This is Louise Dorrat a well known early childhood educator telling a story DEAR ZOO live using props. Click on this link below to watch. Could you tell a popular children's story using a prop box like Louise? What story would it be? What could you use as props? As a project collect the props and tell the story on video just like Louise.
