The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia speak many different languages. Even though the "white man" has tried to kill off aboriginal languages since they came to Australia, many Aboriginal people are trying to keep their languages alive by teaching those languages to the children.
In the area around Melbourne, the Aboriginal people speak Woiwurrung language. A great way to introduce young children to different Aboriginal Languages is through singing songs.
This is a welcome song in Woiwurrung Language that we do in music with the children at HEY. It goes like this:
Wombeya
Gabanay
Narra Garra Noong
Narra Garra Noong
Doo Day Rung
This means:
Come one and all
Together
Here and Now
TASK: Here is a video of Lynda teaching the children "Wombeya" so you can learn the lyrics and actions Kate so you can sing along with the children and maybe one day you can teach the song to the children you teach.
Another great song the children love to sing is Inanay Gupuwana which is in Yorta Yorta language.
TASK: Can you look up some other Aboriginal Language songs with your coach and write down the words. Most Aboriginal languages are not written down because they are passed on using voices only so it doesn't matter how you spell the words.
