There are two Frameworks which are big documents that show educators how to teach in Victoria. The Early Years Learning Framework is for the whole of Australia. The Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework applies to Victoria only.
At HEY we use the Victorian Framework.
Both basically say similar things but the Victorian document is for children from birth to 8 years and the Australian document is for children from birth to 5 years.
Early childhood education is very important because young children's brains grow very fast from 0-8 years. If a child gets a good start, then they will have a better life and they will learn better when they are older.

The Frameworks talk about:
LEARNING OUTCOMES - which means what the children need to learn

PRACTICE PRINCIPLES - which is what the educators need to think about and how they should teach based on all the research that has been done about the best way to teach and learn
This is a summary only. Kate, you are not expected to know the whole Frameworks off by heart or even a little bit, but it is important to understand the basics. Your colleagues will talk about the Frameworks a lot in their work so it is important to know what they are at least talking about.

TASK 1: Read the Summaries here and give an example of something that you have done or seen another educator do at HEY that goes with that learning outcome or practice principle. There are tasks under the summaries for you to complete too. Lots of homework!

TASK 2: You have a Print Out of the Victorian Framework. Put it in your office/middle room. Read through it with your mum or coach out loud and see if you can understand some of it. Have a look at the Aboriginal drawings that are under the Practice Principles - what do you see, what do you think, what do you wonder?
