The Turtle Project - Part 3 Turtle Facts and Habitats with Robyn

As an extension of the Turtle Project, one day Robyn from HEY who is the resident Turtle Expert, gave Kate a lesson on the turtles and their habitat, so Kate could learn more about why we feed the turtles certain food. Robyn took Kate through the feeding that day.

Kate learnt that:

  • Grace and Myrtle are Eastern Long Necked Turtles.

  • They can live until 80 years old in the wild and between 30-40 in captivity.

  • They can eat fish as well as mussels and prawns which is what the children feed them.

  • They can also eat snails but not the garden variety as this has too much bacteria and causes the turtles to become gassy.

You should feed turtles as much food as the size of their head!
  • The turtles eat every 2 days

  • They need to eat their food in water to be able to digest it.

Kate built a bridge to add to the feeding enclosure using blocks. Kate learnt that you can flip the blocks onto their long side to make the bridge high enough for the turtles to get under.

Kate did not want to put the turtles back in the tank but this would be a good next step in Kate's relationship with the turtles at HEY.

TASK 1: What does "GASSY" mean? Have you ever felt gassy? Tell us about it by writing a little poem about feeling gassy.

TASK 2: Kate doesn't like building things with blocks or lego. It would be great for Kate to practice building things especially with blocks as blocks form a great basis for children to learn numeracy skills. Go to the OP Shop when they re-open or to Bunnings and get either a second hand set of blocks or some off cuts of wood for free from Bunnings. Build something out of the blocks and describe what you have built to your coach.
