After researching turtles, Kate built a turtle feeding environment. Kate helped to put together a ramp and painted a cave out of a card board box to add to the big blocks the children had used to make an enclosure the week before.
The Wattle children next door to the Dolphins even came to play with Kate's new environment, showing how an inviting learning environment can provoke discovery for children.
The next week, for turtle feeding time, the children had added to Kate's environment by putting everything onto a big recycled cardboard box. This is an example of children constructing their own play settings. The turtles loved exploring the environment, especially the ramp and the HEY Lizard even joined them!!!
Kate even handled Grace the Turtle a couple of times when she tried to escape. Kate remembered to hold the turtle like a hamburger!
TASK: Adapting play spaces to get everyone involved is an important part of a teacher's job. How could you extend the Turtle Feeding Environment to encourage more children to explore Turtles? Discuss this with Angela and make a plan?
