Kate loves to dance, especially Hip Hop! So Kate decided to prepare a Hip Hop Dance Experience for the children in the Penguin Group at HEY. In this intentional teaching experience, Kate modelled choreography to the children.
Kate’s Hip Hop Dance Lesson Plan
Goals:
To choreograph a Hip Hop dance to a popular song the children love
To teach the children key steps which work on their co-ordination
To teach the children a new dance style
To encourage the children to use the names of steps as a taster for them to choreograph their own steps one day
The Lesson Plan:
Write the steps on the whiteboard
Go through each of the steps with the children giving the name of each one
Put the steps together in a sequence to the song Dance Monkey
Give clear verbal cues to the children when to change steps and demonstrate the steps at the same time (speak loudly, clearly and be enthusiastic with a big smile)
At the end, celebrate the effort of the children and sit down and have a conversation with them:“what did you think of the dance?”“what were your favourite steps?”
Reflection:
The children loved the experience and told Kate their favourite steps were – the upside down windscreen wipers, the monkey and the shoulder shrug/hands in the air! The children were visibly happy when dancing. They loved the choice of song. The next week the children automatically remembered their favourite steps showing how much they loved the experience!
Next Steps:
The next step is to continue with the Dance Monkey dance with Kate’s steps but then open it up to the class to add some of their own steps.
For example, the children could form a circle and Kate could ask “who has an idea for a step?”
She could then ask the children to come up with a name for the step and write it on the board. The children love this form of acknowledgement and it helps with their language skills too.
Then Kate can put the steps together in a sequence. The general rule would be to do each step for 8 or 16 beats before changing to the next step. This helps with the children’s numeracy skills as they begin to notice patterns in the dance.
