Supporting Cultural Identities

HEY has a very diverse community.

One day as part of Project India, Kate did a lesson on how we could help children from different cultures feel a sense of belonging in the classroom and how we could embed diversity in the classroom? Kate came up with some great ideas on how we could honour children from different cultures. They were:

  • Get Parents to come to the service and show things about their culture like when Abi's mum came to class and made Rangoli a pattern with flowers for Diwali

  • Talk to children about their culture

  • Read stories about celebrations

  • Do dances from their culture

  • Put dress ups from their culture in the home corner

  • Cook food from their culture

  • Do henna tattoos but with eye crayons or washable texta

Sometimes cultural awareness is about more than just acknowledging children's culture because this can make them feel "more different". What about "white" children's culture? It is a good idea to get everyone to share their culture and even learn about cultures that are not represented in the classroom. You could do this in a "My Family" book where all families are invited to give a glimpse into their family life and culture through pictures and stories.

The absolute BEST way to support cultural identities is to share our own culture. Kate loves being Greek and she will now be able to share her culture with the Greek Song she wrote with Lynda that teaches the children greetings in Greek! By sharing her culture, Kate can encourage the children to share theirs.
