Symbolic or imaginary play is a wonderful way of developing children's imaginations.
A stick from the garden can magically become a sword, a lightsaber, a spoon, a trumpet!
One day at HEY the children were making "salad" out of a pile of rocks in an old frypan near the sandpit. One of the children asked Kate for some cucumber and ice-cream for their salad! At first Kate said "where am I supposed to find that?!" but after listening to an explanation that we have to use our imagination to see what we can find that "could" be a "pretend cucumber" and "ice-cream", Kate found an ice cream container with sand in it and a piece of bark to be the cucumber.
TASK 1: On a walk find some pretend "salad" ingredients in nature. What would be the lettuce, cucumber, carrots, salad dressing.
TASK 2: Look at the photo below. What could this be used for in children's play? What would you use it for? Remember to use your imagination.
