Many children are obsessed with rainbows! Rainbows are magical and trigger children's imaginations. Rainbows can also teach children a lot about science, language and of course colours!
Kate and Lynda did a long term, integrated learning experience called Project Rainbow that came from reading the Mix it Up picture story book to the children and doing some colour mixing activities around that.
Projects are a wonderful way of helping children to learn something deeply. You learn about one thing but you explore the topic and learn about it in all different ways - that way you remember the information better because you have felt it in your body, your mind and your spirit.
Here are some of the things we did as part of Project Rainbow. All or any part of the Project could be done with the children if ever the children showed an interest in rainbows.
Research Rainbows
Learn the Colours of the Rainbow
Mix the colours of the rainbow from primary colours
Paint Rainbows
Play the Rainbow Card Game
Go on a Rainbow Scavenger Hunt
Make a Rainbow Collage out of natural materials
Make Rainbow Pizza
Make Rainbow Coloured Eggs for Greek Easter with Food Dye
Learn the song Rainbow Connection
Investigate the concept of Rainbows being an "illusion"
Use rainbow colours to describe our feelings
Do an experiment on "refraction" of light using the sun, a glass of water and a piece of paper
Do a crossword about rainbows
Task: Have a look at this Rainbow Pizza Recipe. You might not be able to cook a real Rainbow Pizza with the children due to allergies etc. How could you make a Rainbow Pizza without using real food? Can you remember what colours you need?
