Mix it Up Extension - Colour Mixing with Eye Droppers

As an extension to reading Mix it Up by Herve Tullet to the children, Kate could do this food dye colour mixing activity with the children too.

What you need?

a tray as shown or lots of little glass jars/shot glasses

some eye droppers

3 bigger jars

food dye in red, blue and yellow (the 3 primary colours)

How to play?

  • put some water in the bigger jars and put yellow, red and blue food dye in one jar each

  • present the jars and eye droppers and tray in an attractive and inviting way on a table maybe with the Mix it Up book on a stand nearby so the children are prompted to remember the mixing of colours that happens in that book

  • you could do some intentional teaching like Angela did with Kate showing her how to drop the different colours into the tray

  • you can try to guess with the children what colour will come from mixing blue and yellow for example or red and yellow. Remind the children of what they learnt in Mix it Up so they can make a connection with this experience

  • leave the children to explore the colour mixing on their own or play with them

What are the children learning?

The children are learning lots of things in one learning experience here:

  • This is teaching the children a science concept of mixing colours and can lead to a project on Rainbows as Kate has done in her lessons. This is good for the children's cognitive development and thinking skills.

  • This experience works on the children's fine motor skills - their pincer grip as they hold and manipulate the eye droppers - which will help with their early writing skills

  • This experience is "very relaxing" as Kate said which is great for the children's emotional wellbeing
