Kate Teaches Basketball

Early in 2020, the Dolphin children at HEY were playing in the big yard and Kate noticed Olivia and Tahseen playing with the basketball. At first Kate was supervising the play and making sure other children were not in the way but then she noticed that the girls were trying to get goals. Kate started speaking with the girls and encouraging them. Kate is great with ball games (Kate has amazing hand eye coordination) and she happily accepted a suggestion that she should join in the play with the girls.

Kate decided to show the girls how to throw the ball by pushing up and using their arm muscles. The girls started to practice and then started to get goals! The girls were so excited and proud of themselves, as was Kate.

Kate demonstrated scaffolding very effectively with the girls. Kate was able to teach the children how to shoot goals by just using words to explain how to do it and by showing the girls using her own body.

Shooting hoops is a great physical development activity for the children to practice their gross motor skills and their hand-eye coordination. The children also learn to take turns and encourage each other which helps with their social development.

Kate wrote an observation on her interaction with the girls shooting hoops:

Olivia Plays basketball with Kate and Tahseen. Today in the big yard Olivia play basketball with Tahseen. They were try to get goals but could not get the ball in ring. l helped show them how to get goal and put the ball up by using there shoulders. they practised and got goals. The girls were very happy. The girls work on there gross motor skill Take turns and sharing the ball together To keep going

It was a great first observation as it described the learning. Kate's observations could include a bit more detail in the future - like photos to show the children playing, notes of the children's conversation and the words Kate used to support their learning.

Kate could use this experience like this one to show an experience that can satisfy multiple learning outcomes under the Support Holistic Development Cluster as it aids physical, emotional, social and cognitive development. It is also a good example of scaffolding, joining in play, promotion of physical activity and interacting positively with children.

Task 1: What would you need to set up a play experience that invited children to play basketball? Make a list of the equipment. What do you put under the basketball ring at HEY to ensure it is safe for the children to play.

Task 2: Can you describe how you explained how to shoot goals to Olivia and Tahseen in a bit more detail?
