Even though the roll is not really "formally" taken in class, it is one of the things Kate feels makes her a "real teacher".
If done creatively, taking the roll can move from being a formality to being meaningful for the children. Taking the roll can become a nice, expected ROUTINE that helps the children to feel a sense of belonging. By knowing the children's name and acknowledging them every day when taking the roll, educators can
honour each child. A fun way of taking the roll is to accompany the calling out of a child's name with a HELLO SONG.
Kate came up with a great way of calling the roll.
Kate says: "Is Mia here?"
Mia says in a big voice (because Kate has encouraged her to speak up and with confidence!): YES!
Kate sings (to the tune of The Farmer in the Dell): Mia's here today, Mia's here today, hey ho the merry oh, Mia's here today!
Repeat for each child.
Another possible song is to the tune of Frere Jacques:
Kate: "Where is Mia? Where is Mia?"
Mia: Here I am, here I am
Kate: How are you today - ay?
Mia: Very well I thank you
Kate: Have a good day
Mia: Have a good day
TASK: With your coach or mum can you make up a GoodBYE song routine? Maybe it could be in Greek?
