The Home Corner is usually a permanent learning area in a child care or kinder rooms. It is a place where a lot of imaginary play happens. It is also a place that reflects the children's homes and lives.
Home Corners can be transformed to reflect different places depending on the children's interest like: hospitals, offices, shops, fire stations, airports, beaches and camping sites.
Home Corners are also a great place to honour children's cultures by decorating them to reflect different cultures.
One day the Dolphins at HEY had some old first aid equipment in their Home Corner and decided to play Doctors. Kate did a great job of pretending to be the patient. This was a great example of imaginary play and Kate joining in play.
TASK 1: What do you think the children are learning when they are playing doctors? Discuss this with your coach or your mum. Have a look at the learning outcomes section of the FRAMEWORKS page on this website. Can you find (with your coach's help) some learning outcomes that fit with playing doctors. Write them down in your notebook.
TASK 2: How could you transform the home corner into a shop? What kind of things could you put in there that reflect real life? Do some research and plan a new home corner for the Dolphin room that is a shop. Draw a picture and label the things that you would put in the shop. Why would you put those things in there. Remember, you want your shop to contain as little plastic as possible and for it to look like a real shop for the children.
