Young children have lots of big feelings. Some are happiness, anger, frustration, sadness, disappointment, love - just like in Kate's Feelings Books.
They can sometimes express their feelings in big ways through tantrums, big tears or squealing when they are really happy.
Part of an educator's job is to teach children how to manage their feelings but it is also very important to tell them it is OK to feel what they are feeling. Often adults will tell children to "stop crying" because it makes the adult feel uncomfortable or embarrassed. It is important to try to understand why a child is crying or angry and not always try to fix the feeling.
It is OK if children are not always happy.
Understanding children's feelings helps children trust you. This will make teaching the children how to manage their feelings much easier.
This is a great poster of 10 things to say instead of "stop crying" or "don't cry" to young children.
