Outdoor Scavenger Hunt -Integrated Experience

One day just before Coronavirus lockdown, Kate had her lessons in a new classroom - the Rocket Park! Kate went on an Outdoor Scavenger Hunt!

This is an excellent integrated learning experience to do with the children too.

This type of activity teaches many things all at once:

  • physical activity - you've got to move around, stretch and bend when you are on a scavenger hunt!

  • numeracy - measurement, weight (heavy, light, long, short);

  • science concepts like same but different, different habitats and environments, exploring nature

  • sensory concepts - uses sight, smell, touch

  • language skills - identifying items starting with certain sounds/letters and describing what you find

  • sustainability - thinking about recycling and upcycling

  • observation skills - looking further, lower, more closely

  • thinking skills - making connections between the items and other experiences in life/adapting learning from one context to another eg: "lavender smells like perfume. The parsley mum cooks bolognese with smells nice too".

Here is a video of Kate's Day at the Rocket Park.

TASK: At the time, Kate described this lesson as "the best lesson ever!" I wonder whether there has been a better lesson. Have a think Kate and let your coaches and mum know about your favourite lessons (even though you don't have favourites!)
